What is a Transponder Key?

While you may or may not have heard the term before, you may be wondering what transponder key technology is and what that means in regards to your vehicle key. You can usually tell a transponder key from a non-transponder key by the fact that the former has a plastic key head. This head is not just for looks, as it protects a microchip inside that actually performs the transponder function. Transponder chip technology for vehicles evolved out of similar technology for aviation equipment. When you insert your key into the ignition lock that starts a chain reaction.

The chip inside the key communicates via a radio signal to your ignition system. If the right code is received by your ignition, your engine immobilizer will disengage, which allows your engine to fire up. If the code is somehow scrambled or the wrong one for your vehicle, or if your key is unable to properly send a code, then your vehicle will not start up, even if the key physically fits in the lock just fine.

Many people are surprised to learn the cost of transponder key duplication, especially if they’re expecting to pay under ten dollars or so, like with most key duplications. The higher cost is due to the electronic chip in the key fob and the need for programming this chip on specialized equipment. Lisle Pro Locksmith offers the most affordable price on transponder key duplication and programming in the Lisle, Illinois region.
